Yarra City Council is taking steps to enable a zero-carbon future by supporting the Yarra Energy Foundation’s (YEF) Wired for Tomorrow initiative.

Wired for Tomorrow will accelerate the transition to all-electric precincts in Yarry developing a template for how communities can transition off gas.

The initiative will:

  • harness existing community momentum for electrification
  • deliver an inspiring vision for achieving a large-scale, all-electric future
  • identify the critical steps and key stakeholders necessary to realise this vision.

Yarra City Council Mayor Edward Crossland spoke about the importance of creating a clear path towards electrification.

“Yarra City Council in partnership with the Yarra Energy Foundation is laying the essential groundwork to understand the challenges and opportunities to transition from gas to renewable energy,” Cr Crossland said.

“The Yarra community is fortunate we have members of our community who are passionate about ensuring that electrification will be planned, considered and strategic”, he said.

YEF has selected a precinct within the 3068 postcode to use as a model to create this all-electric vision. This area was chosen because of its range of building types and services, technological compatibility and engaged community.

Council and the YEF will be working closely with local community group Electrify 3068 to create and advance the all-electric vision.

This project is closely aligned with our Council Plan, our Climate Emergency Plan and our Roadmap to Zero Advisory Report.

Dean Kline, CEO of the Yarra Energy Foundation, spoke about the importance of engaging the community in electrification.

“Transitioning Yarra to an all-electric precinct is a massive task, and one that requires everyone to do their part,” Mr Kline said.

“Through the Wired for Tomorrow initiative we’re looking to develop knowledge and support local communities on the journey to all-electric precincts.”
