Townsville City Council has approved a new 12-unit residential development in South Townsville, delivering additional housing supply close to the CBD and supporting Council’s commitment to increasing housing choice across the city.
The approved development at 13-17 Macrossan Street, South Townsville, will see the redevelopment of an existing self-storage site into a low-rise multiple dwelling development comprising 12 units.
The proposal includes a mix of two and three-bedroom homes, on-site parking and landscaped areas.
Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto said the development was the type of infill housing needed to help tackle the city’s housing shortage.
“Like communities across Australia, Townsville is experiencing strong demand for housing, and it’s important we support projects that increase supply in the right locations and support the liveability of our city,” Cr Dametto said.
“This development will deliver 12 new homes in an established urban area close to the CBD, schools, public transport and employment opportunities, giving more people the chance to live closer to where they work and access essential services.
“Boosting housing supply is one of Townsville’s biggest challenges. Developments like this are part of the solution, helping to increase housing choice and meet the needs of our growing community.”
The 2,018 square metre site is located within South Townsville’s Character Residential Zone and currently contains self-storage sheds. Council’s report found the proposal could meet the City’s planning requirements while maintaining an appropriate streetscape character and residential amenity.
Deputy Mayor Suzy Batkovic said appropriate infill development in established suburbs was an important part of accommodating the city’s future growth.
“Well-designed infill housing helps make better use of existing infrastructure and services, while supporting vibrant and connected neighbourhoods,” Cr Batkovic said.
“Importantly, this development replaces a non-residential use with additional housing, creating more opportunities for people to live in an established part of our city.
“As Townsville continues to grow, Council will continue to support appropriate developments that provide more housing options while respecting the character of existing communities.”
The approved development consists of two low-rise residential buildings containing a total of 12 dwellings, including four two-bedroom units and eight three-bedroom units, along with 24 on-site car parks.
