Council awards tender for IYU athletics track construction

Council has awarded the tender for construction of the new IYU athletics track.

The announcement represents an exciting new stage in the development of the regional sporting facility.

“This regional standard athletics track is the final piece of the puzzle for the IYU masterplan,” explained Cardinia Shire Mayor, Cr Jeff Springfield.

The new track will be home to the Pakenham Little Athletics Club and provided much needed athletics facilities for Cardinia Shire and the surrounding regions.

The new facility will meet the IAAF and World Athletics standards with a 10 lane, 110 metre straight and an 8 lane, 400-metre synthetic running track.

All athletics sports are catered for including traditional field events with shot put and discus cages, long and triple jump pits, pole vault and high jump areas as well as a steeple chase course.

“As one of Melbourne’s fastest growing areas, Cardinia Shire continues to see a marked increase in demand for accessible, multi-use and well-designed community infrastructure including regional level facilities such as IYU,” said Cr Springfield.

Central ward Councillor Collin Ross welcomed the news.

“Today’s announcement is exciting news for our local sporting community,” Cr Ross said.

Stage two of the project, which includes the athletics track, will commence in 2022/2023 and includes a sports pavilion with proposed detailed design currently underway.”
