A Logan City Council program that helps older people retain their independence is set to be expanded.

Council Cabs allows those aged over 65 to travel once a week from their home to the nearest major shopping centre for $2 each way.

The service will now visit more shopping centres and will now operate four days a week.

Council subsidises the service which is operated by local not-for-profit TransitCare.

City Infrastructure Chair Councillor Teresa Lane said Council Cabs has been a lifeline for some older residents.

“If there’s one thing our senior citizens prize above all else, it’s their independence,” Cr Lane said.

“The Council Cabs program allows them to do their errands without breaking the bank.

“It’s something that they really look forward to and Council is pleased to be able to offer this service to the entire City of Logan.

“Not only does it connect older residents to their city, it ensures that their business stays local.”

The service operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays depending on the suburb.
