Elders, community and civic leaders will celebrate NAIDOC Week as part of Council’s annual Flag Raising Ceremony event on Monday 6 July at 10:15 am outside the Council Administration Building.
The event will feature cultural traditions and knowledge sharing by local Aboriginal groups including Doonooch Dancers, Mudjingaal Yangamba Choir and Gadhungal Marring and culminate in the raising of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags.
The flag raising ceremony acknowledges and celebrates the achievements, history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the Shoalhaven.
“This is an important event, which recognises the unique and unbreakable connection First Nations people have to Country and the valuable contributions they have made to the community,” said Mayor Patricia White.
“Events such as the flag raising and other NAIDOC Week activities align with Council’s commitment to reconciliation, outlined in our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) launched in 2025,” Cr White said.
The RAP outlines 49 actions Council is taking to strengthen relationships, demonstrate respect and provide opportunities for greater collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
“I encourage residents to come along to the flag raising and get involved with the NAIDOC Week activities being organised by Council and other organisations,” she said.
