Council commits to acknowledging diversity of Yarra’s community

At last night’s Council Meeting, Council unanimously voted to make changes to its Community Flag Schedule.

Council voted to cease flying the Rainbow Flag, and instead fly the Intersex-Inclusive Pride Flag on occasions when Council seeks to acknowledge the complete diversity of Yarra’s community, such as during Midsumma and on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia & Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

The changes to Yarra’s Community Flag Schedule were recommended by Council’s Rainbow Advisory Committee which provides advice to Council on matters concerning the LGBTIQA+ community and helps to guide the progress of Yarra’s LGBTIQA+ Strategy.

The committee is represented by two Councillors and 14 community members, including at least two representatives from Yarra’s LGBTIQA+ business community and at least two representatives from community organisations who support Yarra’s LGBTIQA+ community.

Around 10% of Yarra’s community identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer (LGBTIQ+) which is almost double the Victorian average of 5.7%.

Yarra is a proud leader and advocate in this space and acknowledges that inclusivity and representation is vital to maintaining the health of wellbeing of our diverse community.
