Council crews deployed across the community

Townsville City Council continues to work on the flooding response across the Townsville community.

More than 600 Council staff are out undertaking urgent works to reduce the impact of flooding across our community.

This includes responding to calls on Magnetic Island to clear blocked roads, removing trees and repairing infrastructure and addressing sewerage spills on Banfield Drive.

They are also repairing burst water mains and pipes across the city, closing flooded roads such as Veales Road in Deeragun and controlling traffic along Charters Towers Road where 500mm of water is flowing across the road.

Townsville Local Disaster Management Chair Mayor Jenny Hill thanked Council staff and Emergency Services for working together to help residents across the city.

“Council staff and Emergency Services have been making a monumental effort to mitigate flooding impacts and keep our residents safe during this weather,” Cr Hill said.

“I have to thank each and every person that is out working in these conditions – despite what may be happening in their homes – helping residents across the entire city.

“We also have the Australian Defence Force out helping with our sandbagging efforts and doorknocking which has been a fantastic help.

“The way our community comes together, including all our volunteers helping with filling sandbags at locations around Townsville, is really a testament to our North Queensland spirit.”
