Council crews save 30 lost turtle hatchlings

Townsville City Council crews has saved around 30 lost baby turtles – helping them make their way into the ocean for the first time this morning.

Community Health and Environment Committee Chair Cr Ann-Maree Greaney said members of the public alerted Council after they found the hatchlings on the road and parklands along The Strand.

“The turtles hatched during the night and presumably became confused between the moon and city lighting,” Cr Greaney said.

“Council teams searched along The Strand where they found around 30 hatchlings and returned them to the beach where they helped them find their way to the water.

“I’d like to thank the staff involved for their amazing efforts to help these little babies.”

Cr Greaney urged residents not to touch the hatchlings if they see them on the beach.

“Environmental teams have advised that some of the hatchlings could be confused and should be left alone while they make their way into the water,” Cr Greaney said.

“Residents should contact Council on 13 84 10 to report lost hatchlings.”
