Council delivering improvements to Silvester Oval

A long list of improvement works that will benefit players and spectators at Silvester Oval in Coleraine is being steadily progressed by Southern Grampians Shire Council.

Council recently relevelled and spray sealed the spectator seating area to reduce slip and trip hazards for patrons. It’s also moving along with plans to upgrade the sewerage system with an allocated budget of $350,000.

Mayor Councillor David Robertson said design plans for the new sewerage system were currently with the Department for Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) for approval.

“We’re also taking the first steps in the lighting project at the sportsground, with Powercor on site this week to carry out some preliminary preparation work,” said Cr Robertson.

The $420,000 lighting project includes the installation of four new poles with 150 lux LED lighting – supported by an upgraded power supply. The budget is co-funded by Sport and Recreation Victoria, Coleraine Football Netball Club, Coleraine Sports Ground Committee and Southern Grampians Shire Council.

Cr Robertson said council was committed to providing facilities that enabled residents from across the shire to connect through sport.

“Council strongly believes in the value of these clubs, and applauds the volunteers that run them,” he said. “We are pleased to partner with users of Silvester Oval to strengthen health and wellbeing in our community.

“After much planning, costing and discussion with the Coleraine sportsground users, we are pleased to see some essential tasks being completed or underway at this facility.”

Further raising the bar on the standard of recreation facilities across the shire, Cr Robertson added that council was progressing with redevelopment works at Melville Oval in Hamilton, that will deliver new netball courts, pavilion and a number of modern facilities at the heritage grandstand before the end of 2024.
