Shellharbour City Council will again host the popular Cultural Treasures Festival this month.
The multicultural festival will be held at the Shellharbour Civic Centre during National Harmony Week from Monday 14 March to Saturday 19 March.
The festival features both free and affordable family-friendly workshops, cooking classes, activities and performances.
The event begins with an Aboriginal Welcome to Country and traditional cultural dance performance from local Aboriginal experience and education group, Gumaraa.
Activities throughout the week include Aboriginal story time for children and craft with Kirli Saunders, Vietnamese bamboo xylophone workshop, Japanese calligraphy, Balinese cooking workshop hosted by Wollongong’s Balinese Spice Magic, a children’s Colombian arepa cooking workshop and a movie screening of Disney’s ‘Encanto’.
The Cultural Treasures Festival will also host performances including Irish folk music and traditional dance on Thursday 17 March and South American music by Cha Cha Del Mar on the Civic Centre Lawn on Friday 18 March.
Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said the event was a great way to share and enjoy the rich cultural diversity of the Illawarra region.
“The Cultural Treasures Festival is a wonderful way to celebrate the multiculturalism in our community and share traditions, food, music and celebration of our diversity in Shellharbour”, Mayor Homer said.
“I encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the experience,” he said.
