Council Investigates Foreshore Tree Vandalism: Bayside

Bayside Council has zero tolerance for tree vandalism and is taking swift action to protect and restore a section of foreshore reserve at The Little Grand Parade, Brighton-Le-Sands, where several mature Coastal Banksia (Banksia integrifolia) trees were recently unlawfully cut down.

Council is currently investigating the incident and will take appropriate action where necessary. Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is encouraged to contact Council.

The vandalism has had a significant impact on local habitat, landscape character and the public amenity of the area.

To restore the damaged site, Council is undertaking replacement planting, and rehabilitation works aimed at reinstating canopy cover, supporting native habitat and improving dune stability.

New plantings will be monitored and maintained to ensure their successful establishment.

As part of ongoing site protection measures, a previously used shipping container featuring a black cockatoo mural has been placed on the reserve in front of the vandalised trees to block any desired view and protect the replacement trees until they are established.

Together, the container and CCTV system will act as a further deterrent to vandalism and reinforce Council’s commitment to protecting public trees and coastal reserves.

Bayside Council remains committed to protecting and enhancing the area’s natural environment and thanks the community for its ongoing support in safeguarding local coastal reserves.
