Nillumbik residents can access affordable, high-quality solar through a new local government-supported Solar Savers bulk-buy program.

Council knows householders want solar energy but are often put off by upfront costs, the complexities of getting the right system from a trusted company.

The Solar Savers program makes it easier and more affordable for residents to install a quality home solar system. Reliable, accredited and certified electricians have been contracted by Solar Savers to install high-end systems at an affordable rate.

The program aims to help residents reduce their energy bills and future-proof against increasing energy costs while reducing their household carbon footprint. Following a successful pilot program in Darebin, Nillumbik in conjunction with nine other local councils will deliver a similar solar bulk-buy program.

Mayor Karen Egan says she’s delighted with the opportunity the Solar Saver program offers the community.

“It enables residents to access a high-quality rooftop solar system at an affordable rate. It also helps pensioners and low-income households to avoid prohibitive upfront costs by providing access to a low-interest loan,” she said.

“If we have 100 households register and install solar, we will achieve one of our community climate change mitigation targets by 2020, as outlined in our ‘Climate Change Action Plan 2016-2020’,” Cr Egan said.

Eligible households can also access the State Government’s solar rebate or up to half the value of an average 4kW solar panel system. To further reduce up-front costs, residents may be eligible for an interest-free loan equivalent to the amount of the rebate.
