Council moves towards circular economy approach to waste management

Thank you to everyone that provided feedback to help shape City of Stonnington’s first dedicated Waste Strategy. On Monday 12 September 2022, Council adopted the Towards a circular economy, Our Future Waste Strategy (2022-25).

Informed by community feedback the new three-year plan will help shape Council’s transition towards a circular economy approach to waste management.

Our Waste Strategy(PDF, 4MB) outlines the principles, priorities, and actions towards a new way of thinking about waste, where resources are valued and kept in use for as long as possible.

The strategy identifies three priorities; avoid and reduce waste, reuse for as long as possible, and recover and make waste history.

The actions set out in the strategy include:

1. Implement Recycling Victoria reforms

2. Increase the recovery of food and green waste

3. Futureproof waste services and infrastructure

4. Manage residual waste

5. Empower our community

6. Drive Council policy reform

7. Advocate to federal and state governments

8. Transition to a circular economy

Towards a circular economy, Our Future Waste Strategy (2022–2025) was informed by a process of community consultation. Community and stakeholders were invited to provide feedback on our Draft Waste and Circular Economy Strategy, and how we manage waste in Stonnington now and into the future. Community consultation resulted in a number of amendments to draft action proposals.

Realising the actions set out in Our Future Waste Strategy (2022–2025) will help create a stronger, healthier, more connected and resilient city and support our climate emergency response.
