Council offers additional waste collection and a Christmas tree solution

Those seeking a solution for what to do with all that ripped-open wrapping paper, left-over feast and much-loved Christmas tree after the holidays have cause to celebrate in peace.

Kempsey Shire Council have announced some simple waste solutions to make your holiday season simpler.

Off the back of the successful Get Your Scrap Together campaign, Council have reminded the community that all organic food waste, including the leftovers from a big feast, can go into the green bin which is collected weekly.

And the green bin is also a great solution for those households with real Christmas trees. You can dispose of your tree in the bin as long as they are cut up to fit in so that the lid can close, and the trunks are no thicker than 40cm.

Households with a three-bin service will also receive a bonus yellow bin collection over Christmas and New Year to allow residents to cope with the extra recycling produced over the festive season.

Kempsey Shire Council will offer the extra collection weekly for the period 21 December 2020 to 1 January 2021. This means all serviced households can put their yellow bin out on same day as their red and green bins would normally be collected.

Local businesses that pay for a kerbside yellow bin service can also put out their recycling bin in their off-week collection day. Public bins in South West Rocks, Crescent Head and Hat Head will also get extra collections over this period to prevent bin overflow.

Council’s Coordinator of Waste Services, Gavin Hughes, said Council were aware that Christmas and New Years celebrations often resulted in additional waste.

“Our residents really got on board with disposing of their food waste in the green bin this year, which only further shows how keen we all are to dispose of our waste in the best way,” said Mr Hughes.

“We know this is an extremely busy time of year, so Council are once again offering the additional recycling service to make life easier for our residents who do such a great job of recycling all year round.”

“Council’s waste facilities also accept recycling free of charge during business hours. The main site on Crescent Head Road, South Kempsey is open every day except from midday on the 17th and all-day Christmas Day.”

“Recycling can also be taken to any of our three waste transfer stations located at South West Rocks, Stuarts Point and Bellbrook.”
