Council seeks formal recognition for Berwick Springs Reserve

For many years, local residents have known and referred to the wetland and surrounding reserve area adjoining Berwick Springs Estate – located south of Greaves Road – as ‘Berwick Springs Reserve’, despite the area not having an officially gazetted name.

Council wrote to Geographic Names Victoria (GNV) seeking formal recognition of the long-standing community name ‘Berwick Springs Reserve’.

GNV has now gazetted the name, which relates to 20 land parcels comprising the reserve. Thirteen are owned by Melbourne Water and seven are owned by Council.

Kowan Ward Councillor Shane Taylor said the proposal was an opportunity to formally recognise a name that has long been part of the local community.

“This is about recognising a name that is already well established in the community and giving it the official recognition it deserves,” he said.

“Berwick Springs Reserve is a much-loved local destination where people walk, exercise, meet with friends and family, and enjoy the outdoors.

“Formalising the name will help ensure consistency across the area and preserve an important part of the community’s identity for future generations.”

The registration of ‘Berwick Springs Reserve’ does not affect the recent naming by the State Government of Guru Nanak Lake.
