This year Federation Council is hosting a number of free initiatives on Bangerang land to celebrate NAIDOC Week.
NAIDOC Week invites all Australians to acknowledge our history that dates back thousands of generations, embrace our culture and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This year’s theme is Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up. The theme encourages all of us to champion institutional, structural, collaborative, and cooperative change while celebrating those who have already driven and led change in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities over generations.
Federation Council Mayor, Cr Pat Bourke said that celebrations are held across the Federation region each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
“NAIDOC Week is celebrated nationally not only in indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life as the annual event provides us all with a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities in recognition and support of our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and culture,” he said.
This year Federation Council are hosting a number of free initiatives to celebrate NAIDOC Week:
On Monday, July 4 come along to Many Mob’s indigenous leader, Iris Troutman’s fun and educational Coolamon decorating and Johnny Cake making! All welcome!
Bring your pre-school and primary school age kids along to the Corowa library on Wednesday, July 6 to enjoy enchanting dreamtime story time.
Join in Friday’s puppet show, presented by Little Wings Puppets, “The Owl’s Apprentice”, featuring a variety of Australian animals. And join in the puppet making workshop, learning the indigenous names of our native Australian animals and be able to take home your own very special puppet!
Encourage the kids to be involved in the National “Koori Kids” colouring in and story time competition. Resources will be sent to all Federation schools, will also available in Federation Council’s libraries located in Mulwala, Corowa, Howlong or Urana and will be available to download on Council’s website.
On Thursday, July 21, the community are invited to embark on the Many Mobs Connections Day short cultural walk, across the Yarrawonga/Mulwala Bridge. Follow the footsteps along the path while reading and engaging in the dream time stories, history and visual aspects along the way. Culminating with cultural activities in Kennedy Park.
