Council to help local sports clubs get back in the game after floods

Townsville City Council will be seeking financial support to help local sports clubs get back in the game after the unprecedented floods.

Several sporting associations and clubs had their facilities severely damaged by the floods including Townsville Hockey, Townsville Basketball, AFL Townsville, NQ Football, Townsville Cricket and the Townsville Cycle Club among others.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said local sports were crucial to creating a community and many would require new infrastructure and rebuilt facilities.

“Local sport on the weekend is a ritual for thousands of families in our city,” Cr Hill said.

“It’s important that we rebuild these damaged sporting facilities so local families can start to return to a more normal routine.

“Council will be working closely with State and Federal Governments to access disaster recovery and resilience funding to help our city get back on its feet.”

Community and Cultural Development Committee Chair Cr Colleen Doyle said Council would be working with local sporting associations and clubs to help get them back in the game.

“Council wants to make sure local families don’t spend any unnecessary time on the sidelines from this flood recovery effort,” Cr Doyle said.

“Our team will continue to reach out to all affected sports clubs to understand exactly what is required to get them back up and running.”

Councillor Maurie Soars – a veteran sports administrator – said it was crucial to help get local sports associations and clubs get back on the field after the floods.

“These sporting clubs play a huge role in bringing our community together,” Cr Soars said.

“Encouraging residents – of any age – into sports also has major health benefits.”
