Council to take action for Local Government sustainability

Swan Hill Rural City Council has resolved to prepare a submission to the Parliamentary Inquiry into local government sustainability being undertaken by the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Regional Development and Transport.

The inquiry seeks to comprehensively understand the challenges faced by local governments in meeting infrastructure needs across regional, rural, and remote areas.

Council’s Mayor, Cr Stuart King said Council’s submission to the Parliamentary Inquiry would align with their commitment to transparent governance and community engagement.

“Council welcomed the opportunity to make submissions to both the Federal and State inquiries, as we recognised them as platforms for critical evaluation of the existing framework of local government funding and services,” Cr King said.

Cr King stressed the importance of equity, sustainability, and responsiveness to community needs in this evaluation process.

“While the specific details of our submission remain confidential during this Inquiry process, I highlight the significance of community participation in this process as well.

“We understand the importance of transparency and accountability in the allocation of public funds. These inquiries provide an avenue for us to examine the existing funding methods and explore alternative models that may better serve the interests of our residents,” Cr King said.

Cr King said residents can actively participate in shaping the future of local governance by contributing to the inquiry through submissions, public hearings, or community forums.

“I urge residents to get involved and ensure our local voices are heard. Your input is valuable in shaping the future of our local government and ensuring that our community receives the services and support it deserves,” he said.

The Committee is seeking written submissions by 31 May 2024 from organisations and individuals that provide recommendations relating to any or all of the inquiry’s terms of reference.
