Council to upgrade lighting at Leura pedestrian crossing

Council is upgrading the lights at a pedestrian crossing on Leura Mall, north of the train station, to improve safety.

The lighting project, which commences Monday 27 September, follows feedback from the community and is one of a number of projects being delivered after Council secured funding from the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

“The new lights will highlight the pedestrian crossing, making it safer for pedestrians and vehicles, especially at dusk and during the night,” said Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill.

“Providing adequate lighting is an important consideration for our road upgrades and this project will improve safety for all road users.

“As this is a busy area, near a train station, Council will put measures in place throughout construction to ensure minimum disruption to both local residents and business operators at Leura Village and we ask the community for patience during these safety upgrade works.”

The upgrade involves the installation of new street lights on each side of the pedestrian crossing on Leura Mall and minor excavation works.

Works will take place Monday to Friday, 7am-6pm. Traffic controls will be in place during the works and parking on the eastern side of the street will be limited for a short period during construction.

When the street light poles are installed, there will be some electric works and there may be further minor traffic flow measures.

At times throughout the project there will be alternative pedestrian access through the site and limited access to on-street parking on the eastern side of the street.

The bus stop will be closed between Thursday 30 September and Tuesday 5 October inclusive. Wayfinding signage will direct people to other bus stops in close proximity.

The works are expected to be complete by the end of October 2021 (subject to disruptions caused by weather or COVID-19 restrictions).
