Council welcomes cautious easing of COVID-19 restrictions

Monash Council welcomes the State Government’s announcement of a further cautious easing of restrictions that means outdoor playgrounds, libraries, community facilities and youth centres can reopen with a limited number of patrons at one time.

Outdoor playgrounds, skateparks and communal gym equipment will reopen from Tuesday 26 May but people must continue to practise social distancing, hand hygiene and common sense.

From 1 June, libraries, youth centres, community facilities and galleries (including Monash Gallery of Art) will reopen with no more than 20 people allowed in a single area, plus those needed to operate the space as Victoria moves into the next phase of a “new normal.”

The message from government remains that if you don’t have to do something that’s not essential, don’t do it and stay home.

Mayor Councillor Stuart James said Council was excited to welcome back the community to its facilities and services but said people would need to observe the social distancing and hygiene measures required whilst accessing these services.

“We can’t wait to see the community back at our places like libraries and community centres but it’s important to remember we must still be vigilant and follow the government guidelines to avoid further spread of COVID-19,” Cr James said.

“We will be acting in strict accordance with the protocols and have in place information and signage to ensure people know what they need to do to keep themselves, their families and our staff safe.

“It has been a tough time for the community and we want to thank everyone for their patience and commitment during these restrictions. It’s because of these efforts together that we can move forward to getting us back to as much normality as possible.

“We’ve all done so well to follow the restrictions in Monash but let’s not waste that great work. Please continue to do the right thing by everyone, follow the social distancing and hygiene measures and let’s all work together to stay safe.”
