Council Widens Its Dedication To Dog Rehoming

Southern Grampians Shire Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with City of Mount Gambier and District Council of Grant to take in impounded dogs after the mandatory holding timeframe of 72-hours for the purpose of finding them a new home.

Council runs an established rehoming program from its Hamilton pound facility, and already provides pound and rehoming services to Moyne Shire Council. Hamilton has the capacity, and resources, to extend its assistance to these additional municipalities.

Southern Grampians Shire Council CEO, Tony Doyle, said Council was pleased to partner with City of Mount Gambier and District of Grant Council in this important program. “Our team at Southern Grampians has worked hard to establish its successful animal rehoming program over the last few years, finding loving, new homes for many animals,” Mr Doyle said. This MoU also provides an additional revenue source for Council and will in turn reduce the cost to rate payers of the pound operations.”

“We are pleased to now be able to expand the service to include Mount Gambier and Grant municipalities and we look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

The Hamilton Pound has capacity to house 22 domestic animals with each animal cared for by Council Rangers while the search for a new home takes place. The MoU complies with regulations set out in the Domestic Animals Act 1994. All dogs will receive a veterinary check prior to transfer to the Hamilton Pound. So far, Southern Grampians Shire Council has received six dogs as part of this new partnership arrangement.

“We have a very engaged and passionate social media community, which is where we showcase our animals searching for new homes in the first instance,” explained Mr Doyle.

“As always, we encourage everyone to ensure that their pets are microchipped with up-to-date details, registered, and vaccinated. When considering pet adoption, we want to remind the community that responsible pet ownership starts with you.”
