Snowy Monaro Regional Council will hold mid-term mayoral elections this month, as required by the Local Government Act. The positions of Mayor and Deputy Mayor will both be up for election at the September Ordinary Council Meeting, held on Thursday 21 September 2023 in Cooma.

Elections for Mayor and Deputy Mayor in the Snowy Monaro are voted on by councillors. Councillors will decide during the meeting which ballot method will be used to conduct the vote, between three options allowed by legislation:

  • Open ballot (such as a show of hands)
  • Ordinary ballot (first-past-the-post)
  • Preferential ballot (preferences distributed among candidates)

Any current councillor is able to nominate as a candidate for Mayor or Deputy Mayor, with another councillor seconding their nomination.

Ordinarily, Mayors are elected to two-year terms, but due to the postponement of the last local government election the current term is shorter than normal.

Mayors elected in September 2023 will serve until 14 September 2024, when the current Council term ends.
