The immense contribution of our voluntary committees to the wellbeing of our communities never ceases to amaze me. For those participating there is the satisfaction and enjoyment of making a difference for the better.

We all recognise at times that there are differing views, priorities and personalities. Inevitably there can sometimes be tension and even conflicts and factions. Our community organisations are part of real life.

So how can we avoid these challenges or at least manage them? Here are some suggestions:

1. Understand the difference between the “what” and the “how”. So often we all agree what we want to achieve and the important outcomes but differ on how to go about achieving them. By focusing more and agreeing on what we want to achieve, it is often easier to reach agreement on how to go about it.

2. Without compromising your principles, is there an opportunity by listening carefully to other views there can be an accommodation of differences – a win-win outcome so we can share success?

3. Let’s always respect those elected to leadership roles. There are future opportunities for you or others to put your hand up for those roles if you want to see change.

4. Always finish a meeting on a positive note. Ideally have coffee and relax together and part on good terms. Put any differences behind you.

5. Remember to have fun and share it around.

6. If one organisation isn’t really your thing, there always are plenty of other opportunities!
