Cr Robyn Gulline: Keeping our chins up

Congratulations to Jannik Blair and all the athletes who competed in the Paralympics. I was in awe watching their grit and determination.

With diverse skills and abilities, the athletes each celebrated what they could achieve rather than dwell on what they couldn’t.

They are a great inspiration, encouraging us to focus more positively on our own abilities, achievements and accomplishments.

The winter sporting season wasn’t quite what had been planned but we’ve all learned to be more spontaneous and take advantage of small windows of opportunity. While disappointing that the finals have been interrupted, it was great to see so many involved, whenever possible.

Research shows that sport, volunteering and working together for a common purpose is a great antidote for anxiety, depression, anger and social isolation.

Thankfully the regional lockdown eased last week but COVID rules restrictions continue to be a challenge. The mental health impacts of the past 18 months will haunt our society for decades. Please continue to support our small businesses.

Be kind to yourself and those around you. A smile and some of your time may help improve your mindset and that of the receiver.

Spring is such an invigorating season. The plants are flowering, crops are shooting up and the lambs are entertaining in the paddocks. With the warmer, longer days it is more inviting to spend time outdoors whether that be exercising, gardening or just sitting and enjoying the sunshine.
