Moreof the great Territory outdoors will soon be available to cyclists and walkersfollowing the awarding of a tender to extend a path from Howard Springs toCoolalinga.
Thenew link will extend the shared path network from Palmerston through to the newshopping precinct at Coolalinga, giving Territorians healthier travel options.
TheTerritory Labor Government awarded the contract to THE Mining Pty Ltd for $3million. The project will support more than 20 local jobs.
Onaverage, more than 80 cyclists use the existing shared path between Palmerstonand Howard Springs each day.
Thenew path will follow the route of the old National Australian Rail Corridor,promoting alternative travel options for residents, visitors and commutersbetween Coolalinga, Howard Springs, Palmerston and Darwin significantlyextending the regional shared path network.
Thepath will incorporate hand railings fabricated by Correctional Services, andheritage features which include the remaining structures of two originalrailway bridges and other elements of the National Australian Rail Corridor acknowledging the history behind it.
Forsafety reasons, once the shared path is built, there will be no vehicle accessalong or across the path. However, a formal crossing will be in place where thepath connects to Grice Crescent.
