Here in Wollongong, we’re proud of our local artisans, creatives and businesses. That’s why we’re celebrating the creativity of our city at the Creative Container.
During lockdown we gave the Creative Container in the Crown Street Mall a makeover with local artist Kraken Kreative commissioned to paint the space and give the container a fresh look in time for the holidays.
Now, we’ve opened the Creative Container up to local artists, makers and start-up businesses as a free community space for pop-up exhibitions, retail offerings, workshops, live music and more. Artists and businesses can request to book the container for 1-2 weeks by visiting the Wollongong CBD website.
“There is a lot happening at the moment in the Wollongong CBD to support businesses and bring colour, energy and creativity to the Crown Street Mall,” Wollongong City Council Director Community Services Kerry Hunt said.
“So far, we’ve had a couple of different local creatives and businesses including floral artist Paper Dahlia Designs and local music store Music Farmers take over the Creative Container. In the next few weeks in the lead up to Christmas there will be a number of Handmade Christmas Market artisans who are selling unique handmade gifts, perfect for Christmas.”
At the same time, live music is back in the Crown Street Mall. Council is running a seven-week program in the lead up to Christmas which sees paid performers and musicians take the stage at lunchtime, every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
“Our Live at Lunch program has returned and people visiting lunching or shopping in the Crown Street Mall during the week will be able to enjoy music performed by talented local musicians,” Ms Hunt said.
“Wollongong has a strong local live music culture and Council is pleased to be able to offer this paid opportunity to up-and-coming artists. I highly recommend that if you visit the Mall in the lead-up to Christmas, stop by for a take-away lunch and enjoy the music.”
