Ten community organisations across Cairns will be better equipped to protect their facilities, members and volunteers thanks to $250,000 in Australian Government funding secured through the Strengthening Community Safety Grant Program.
The funding will support practical upgrades such as fencing and CCTV systems, helping protect important community facilities, deter criminal activity and preserve spaces that bring people together.
How were the organisations selected?
Following a competitive application process that attracted 31 submissions from Cairns Regional Council’s Go Clubs network, 10 organisations were selected to receive support for security upgrades.
The projects will deliver direct benefits to participating organisations, with Council responsible for managing and delivering the approved works.
Why is the funding important?
Federal Member for Leichhardt Matt Smith said he understood the significant impact crime and vandalism can have on community organisations, making funding for crime prevention a worthwhile investment in local communities.
“Having worked with so many of these clubs whilst working with the Cairns Regional Council Go Club Program, I understand the passion the volunteers have for their clubs and organisations,” Mr Smith said.
“I know the impact that crime has on the clubs financially and the toll that it takes on them personally.
“I am proud to be delivering funding to prevent crime and vandalism for our community organisations.”
Cairns Mayor Amy Eden said the funding would deliver practical benefits for local community groups.
“This funding is about helping our clubs spend their money on what they’re there to do, not cleaning up after crime.”
“The strong response to the program shows there is significant demand for initiatives that improve safety and security across our community.”

- Barron Trinity Rugby Union Club: $22,447.60 for fencing
- Cairns Agricultural, Pastoral and Mining Association: $13,108.40 for a CCTV security system.
- Earlville Sports Club: $15,809.05 for a CCTV security system
- Freshwater Tennis Club: $10,000.00 for a CCTV security system
- Gordonvale Golf Club: $20,496.00 for fencing
- Leichhardt Junior Soccer Club: $20,524.20 for fencing
- Mulgrave Combined Cricket Association: $29,060.00 for fencing
- NorthSite Contemporary Arts: $10,100.00 for a CCTV security system
- Softball FNQ: $34,750.00 for a CCTV security system
- Southside Comets Football Club: $32,000.09 for a CCTV security system
What happens next?
Council will now work with the successful organisations to deliver the approved security upgrades, helping to protect community facilities, deter crime and provide greater peace of mind for the volunteers, members and visitors who use them.
