Crime Series In Darwin 5 March

Northern Territory Police are investigating multiple violent incidents across Darwin yesterday.

Around 10:30am, police received multiple reports of a group of youths harassing members of the public at a shopping centre on Trower Road, Casuarina. An 81-year-old woman was allegedly robbed by 3 youths, with one youth allegedly threatening her with a knife before the group fled with her handbag.

Police attended the location and subsequently identified a number of the offenders and recovered the handbag.

A 7-year-old boy was conveyed into the care of a responsible adult while investigations continued.

Around 12:15pm, police received reports of aggravated robberies across the Darwin CBD, including 2 service stations, a licensed premises and at least one member of the public.

CCTV tracked the offenders to a nearby bus and officers arrested 5 youths in possession of cash, knives and various stolen property.

Three 11-year-olds were conveyed into the care of a responsible adults while a 13 and 14-year-old were later charged with property and weapons offences. Both were bailed to appear in court on 11 March 2024.

At this stage it is believed that at least one of the offenders was present at both the Casuarina and Darwin incidents.

Commander Daniel Bacon said “The behaviour police saw yesterday was completely unacceptable and has absolutely no place within our communities. Thankfully no one was seriously injured and I commend the work of CCTV operators, Joint Emergency Service Communication Centre dispatchers and attending members.

“All youths have been referred to Territory Families and it is hoped that the team can work with the youths and their families so we do not see this repeated behaviour.
