A critical incident investigation has been declared after a man died during a police operation in the Riverina today.
About 10.15am (Tuesday 21 July 2026), officers responded to a home in Malta Crescent, Ashmont, following reports of a concern for welfare.
Officers attached to Riverina Police District responded and found that a man – armed with a firearm – had barricaded himself inside the home.
Specialist police, including Police Negotiators, attended the scene and a perimeter was established.
About 2.15pm, police entered the home and found the man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
No one else was in the house.
NSW Ambulance responded, however the man – believed to be in his 60s – died at the scene.
A crime scene has been established and a Critical Incident Team from Murrumbidgee Police District will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
