Critical incident declared after motorcyclist injured in Shellharbour crash

A critical incident investigation is underway after a motorcyclist was injured in a crash following a police pursuit near Shellharbour yesterday.

Just before 11pm yesterday (Monday 18 March 2024), an officer from Lake Illawarra Police District attempted to stop a motorcyclist on the Princes Highway, Croom 9km east of Shellharbour, after the rider allegedly failed to stop.

Police directed the rider to stop, but when he allegedly failed to do so a pursuit was initiated. The pursuit was terminated immediately due to the speed of the rider.

A short time later, police found that the motorcycle had crashed into a median strip, with the rider, a 34-year-old man, sustaining severe leg injuries. He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical condition.

A crime scene has been established which is being examined by officers attached to the Crash Investigation Unit.

An investigation has commenced into the incident by a Critical Incident Investigation Team from Wollongong Police District.

Those investigations will be subject to an independent review.
