Critical incident investigation underway after man hit by truck at Wollongong, NSW

A critical incident investigation has been launched after a man was injured when hit by a truck at Wollongong this morning.

Shortly after midnight (Friday 25 March 2022), police began receiving calls due to concerns about the welfare of a man walking in the northbound lanes of the M1 Motorway at Wollongong.

When an officer attached to the Dog Unit stopped on the motorway and spoke to the 27-year-old man, the man ran into traffic and was struck by a truck.

Officers rendered first aid at the scene before the man was taken by NSW Ambulance paramedics to St George Hospital. He is reported to be in a critical condition.

A critical incident team from South Coast Police District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

That investigation will be subject to an independent review.

Some northbound lanes on the M1 remain closed as investigations continue; motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible and monitor www.livetraffic.com for updates.
