Critical Incident, Massey

A man is in serious condition after being shot by Police as a firearms incident was brought to a conclusion in Massey on Wednesday night.

Police had earlier responded to emergency calls that this man had been in possession of a long-barrelled weapon on Mānutewhau Road at around 7.49pm.

Further reports suggested the man has pointed the weapon at a neighbour.

Acting Superintendent Matt Laurenson, Waitematā District Commander, says units were dispatched and Police established a cordon around the property believed to be occupied by the alleged offender.

“While cordons were established, the man has discharged a long-barrelled weapon towards Police officers, however no Police staff were struck or suffered any injuries.

The Police Negotiation Team deployed to the scene and attempted to engage with the man, but he has refused to comply with officers attempting to take him into custody.

A series of tactical options was used to assist, including sponge rounds and Taser, but these had no effect on the man, and his behaviour has continued to escalate.

“The Armed Offenders Squad moved forward at 10.49pm and entered the address, and the man was subsequently shot by Police,” Acting Superintendent Laurenson says.

The 55-year-old man was taken into custody and treated by Hato Hone St John’s staff who have transported him to hospital.

He is in a serious but not life-threatening condition. Surgery will be carried out today.

“Having to use a firearm is the last thing any Police officer wants to do, and in this instance our officers had no other option available,” Acting Superintendent Laurenson says.

“I acknowledge the staff involved in last night’s incident who have worked in difficult circumstances to ensure this matter could be resolved.

“The man remains under Police guard and charges will be laid over this incident.”

As standard procedure, Police have established a critical incident investigation.

As part of this process, the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified.

“Support is being offered to the man’s family as well as our staff involved last night,” Acting Superintendent Laurenson says.

Locals in Massey, particularly Mānutewhau Road, can expect to see an increased Police presence in the area today, as a scene examination continues.
