Cruelty, assault charges after man, dog attacked in Pyrmont

A man has been charged with animal cruelty and assault offences after a man and his dog were allegedly attacked at Pyrmont.

Witnesses told police, a 33-year-old man was walking his toy poodle, called Zico, along Allen Street just after 7pm (Friday 24 April 2020), when a man at the intersection of Harris Street called him over then allegedly began yelling abuse at him.

The man then allegedly punched the dog owner and kicked the poodle as they tried to walk away.

A passer-by intervened; however, the dog owner was again assaulted before more people came to his aid and the man ran away.

Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command were notified and commenced an investigation.

Following extensive inquiries, a 34-year-old man was arrested shortly after 8pm yesterday (Sunday 26 April 2020) when he attended Day Street Police Station. He has now been charged with five offences;

• Stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm

• Commit an act of cruelty upon an animal

• Common assault

• Behave in offensive manner, and

• Armed with intent to commit indictable offence

He was refused bail and will appear before the Central Local Court later today (Monday 27 April 2020).
