Quick thinking and fearless assistance to two injured police officers has seen Malcom Hammond named the Lions Club of the City of Adelaide and South Australia Police (SAPOL) 2023 Citizen of the Year.
On 3 May, 2023, Mr Hammond was going about his normal work day, returning from his lunch break, when he noticed two police cars enter his street.
Shortly afterward, he received a phone call from his wife who reported hearing “two loud bangs”, and he returned to investigate.
Turning into the street, Mr Hammond was confronted with a distressing scene and, without hesitation, administered crucial first aid to officers Brevet Sergeant Ian Todd and Constable Jordan Allely, who both had critical injuries.
Despite being awarded for his actions, Mr Hammond claims others are just as deserving.
“I am humbled and didn’t expect this at all,” he said.
“I’m just happy that the officers injured are okay, and the response from the medical staff on the scene was paramount.
“My wife Kerri also helped by getting blankets and water. She also deserves recognition.”
Commissioner of Police Grant Stevens joined Lions Club members at a special ceremony this morning, 7 March, at Police Headquarters, where Mr Hammond was presented with the award.
“Malcolm’s selfless and courageous actions ensured that Brevet Sergeant Todd and Constable Allely received immediate, lifesaving first aid and compassionate support during this extremely distressing incident,” he said.
“On behalf of South Australia Police, I’d like to express immense gratitude for his assistance. Malcolm’s only concerns were for the welfare of our officers and his actions are a true indication of his heroic character.”
Since 1979, the annual award has been made to a civilian who performs extraordinary voluntary service to assist SAPOL in the performance of duties during a one-off significant event.
Lions Club of the City of Adelaide President Raymond Najar considered Mr Hammond to be a deserving award recipient.
“The City of Adelaide Lions Club is honoured to partner with SAPOL these past 38 years, who identify a member of the public that places themselves in harm’s way or voluntarily contributes to enhance the service provided by an officer in their line of duty,” he said.
“The recognition of a private individual, who demonstrates initiative to support and assist any SAPOL officer in their line of duty, deserves to be acknowledged for their selfless act.”
Meanwhile, nominations for the 2024 Lions Club of the City of Adelaide and South Australia Police Citizen of the Year award will open in July this year.
