Cumberland Council secures partnership with Parramatta Eels National Rugby League Women’s (NRLW) Team

Cumberland Council paves the way for women’s rugby league as the Parramatta Eels National Rugby League Women’s (NRLW) Team signs a two-year partnership, making Cumberland their new home.

The state-of-the-art, $11.3 million Eric Tweedale Stadium in Granville has been named the official training ground for the team, equipped with modern facilities and a grandstand with seating for 760 spectators.

Mayor Lisa Lake welcomed the announcement saying this partnership marked a significant milestone in supporting women’s sport and fostering community engagement.

“We’re thrilled to make Eric Tweedale Stadium in Granville home to the Parramatta Eels National Rugby League Women’s Team and excited to be able to host some rugby league matches for our community and visitors,” she said.

“This partnership demonstrates Council’s commitment to promoting gender equality in sports and showcases the importance of supporting women’s sport in our region by providing equal opportunities and resources for both male and female athletes, so that they can hone their skills and compete at their highest level.”

Parramatta Eels CEO, Jim Sarantinos said the important partnership will assist in growing junior rugby league in the Eels’ catchment area and help in building participation.

“Our partnership with Cumberland Council and our move to Eric Tweedale Stadium is an important milestone for our Women’s Rugby League Program. This $11.3m facility will be a fantastic base for our Women’s Rugby League programs,” he said.

As pre-season training gets underway, the collaboration between Cumberland Council and the Parramatta Eels NRLW Team extends beyond the playing field, with the Eels women’s rugby league development programs based out of the Eric Tweedale Stadium set to engage and inspire the local community.

The Parramatta Eels NRLW Team is part of the Parramatta Eels Club and is known for its excellence and commitment to rugby league in Western Sydney, showcasing top-tier talent and dedication to women’s sports.

The Eels also have one of the largest NRLW Junior Development Programs in Western Sydney with the rates of female participation continuing to grow across the region.

The community is invited to attend the Parramatta Eels trial match against the St George Illawarra Dragons at Eric Tweedale Stadium on Friday 7 July from 7pm.
