The Territory Labor Government is creating a safer Territory by working with communities to develop local solutions to local issues.
The Mparntwe/Alice Springs Youth Action Plan 2019-2021 was developed in collaboration with key community partners, including young people, and outlines the goals and actions for the community over two years.
The Action Plan is another part of the Territory Labor Government’s plan to cut crime by focusing on Aboriginal-led solutions to issues affecting at-risk and disengaged young people.
The Mparntwe/Alice Springs Youth Action Plan outlines seven goals, these include:
- Build capacity of existing youth services to enable long-term sustainable change
- Improve outcomes for young people in the Youth Justice system
- Better support for remote communities
- Support the development and implementation of mentoring programs for Aboriginal young people
- Improve education, training, development and employment outcomes for disengaged youth
- Develop integrated programs for young people who are out late at night
- Encourage the development of housing options that are flexible and responsive to the needs of young people
The rollout of the Mparntwe/Alice Springs Youth Action Plan will commence immediately with the development of a number of youth action groups in St. Joseph’s Flexi Centre, the Gap Youth Centre and Tangentyere Council’s Brown Street youth drop-in centre.

“The Territory Labor Government is investing in the most extensive suite of measures to cut youth crime, this includes preventing crime before it happens.
“To keep our community safer and to ensure that every young person has opportunities for a bright future, it is essential that young people’s concerns and ideas for their community are heard. The Mparntwe/Alice Springs Youth Action Plan was entirely driven by the Alice Springs community.
“As a Government, we have already invested in key initiatives that aligns with their goals. This includes expanding the hours of youth drop-in centres, creating the Youth Engagement Night Officers, investing in more youth diversion programs and as a whole, reforming the youth justice system.”
