Dangerous conditions forecast tonight and tomorrow

NSW SES

Heavy rain and very strong winds are expected to increase tonight, bringing dangerous conditions to a large part of the NSW coast.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for an area between Taree and Bega. The conditions are expected to worsen tonight in areas including the Mid North Coast, Hunter, Sydney, Illawarra and South Coast.

Heavy rain may cause flash flooding, and river heights could rise rapidly over and above what has been experienced in the past few days. This could happen during the night.

Strong winds are expected which could cause trees and powerlines to fall. Landslides are also possible, which could block roads.

If you live on or near a river, creek or stream, or an area at risk, particularly if it’s already in flood, stay up to date and be ready to take action.

Monitor the latest forecast and warnings overnight as the situation continues to rapidly evolve.

If you are in a low lying area or close to rivers or streams:

  • Stay up to date through the night by monitoring the BOM website at bom.gov.au
  • Monitor conditions in your local area. It may be safer to relocate now to a safer place such as a friend or family member’s home away from flood areas.
  • Listen to local radio and keep your mobile phone charged and nearby. If you receive a warning from the NSW SES, take it seriously and take action immediately.
