Dangerous driving incident at Mackay

A 27-year-old man is assisting police with inquiries following the dangerous operation of a vehicle, pursuit and crash at Mackay this morning.

Shortly before 5.30am, officers responded to reports of a person slumped over the wheel of a maroon SUV parked in Maguire Street, Andergrove.

As they approached the vehicle, the driver started it and accelerated away, ramming a police vehicle.

A tyre deflation device was deployed nearby and proved successful, however the vehicle continued travelling along a number of roads at excessive speeds through Andergrove, towards the Harbour, Mount Bassett then back onto River Street through Mackay.

The vehicle then turned from Shakespeare into Milton when it struck a truck and rolled.

The driver of the SUV was taken into custody and transported to Mackay Base Hospital for treatment.

The truck driver was not physically injured.

Two officers sustained minor cuts during the incident.

Investigations are continuing.
