Day 7 – Christmas Road Safety Campaign (phase 2)

The Christmas holiday road toll has risen to five following a two vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway at Lowmead yesterday which tragically claimed the life of a 21-year-old man.

A sedan and a small truck towing a caravan collided head-on south of Miriam Vale at around 11.10am.

A man and woman aged 60 sustained minor injuries and were transported to hospital however the driver of the sedan, a man from Upper Mount Gravatt, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

In addition on Day 7 of the Christmas Road Safety Campaign (phase 2) a 30-year-old South Townsville man who was intercepted diving along Entertainment Drive allegedly returned a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 0.330% – more than six times the legal limit.

He was tranpsorted to the Townsville watchhouse and charged with drink driving and is due to front court in January.

Meanwhile in Ironbark a 23-year-old P-Plater took an expensive trip home after allegedly being detected travelling along the Brisbane Valley Highway at 109kms per hour in a 60 zone.

Disappointingly, more than 3,600 motorists were detected speeding along Queensland roads on day seven of the campaign.

A further 46 people also returned postivie roadside drugs tests while 14 people were caught on their mobile phones while in the car.

Police will continue to target high risk road users this weekend in the lead-up to New Years Eve.

Phase 2 of the Christmas Road Safety Campaign continues up to and including January 3.
