The Ethical Standards Command is investigating the death of a 46-year-old man following a police operation at Waterford West this evening, 17 August.
Around 6pm, police intercepted a vehicle on Kingston Road, near Beutel Street, and arrested the sole male driver.
Preliminary information indicates the man became non-compliant and was restrained by police.
Shortly after while in police custody, the man sustained a serious self-inflicted injury.
Police immediately provided first aid, however the man was declared deceased at the scene.
The State Coroner has been advised, and the Ethical Standards Command is investigating.
The investigation is subject to independent oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
