Torquay College student DeeDee is the winner of the 2024 Surf Coast Shire Community Arts Calendar competition people’s choice award.

The nine-year-old’s mixed media piece Salty captured the attention, and votes of the community, and will grace the cover of the 2024 Surf Coast Shire Community Arts Calendar.

As the 13thwinner, DeeDee’s piece will feature alongside 12 earlier winners announced last month during the Community Arts Calendar Exhibition launch.

The launch on Friday 13 October, at the Anglesea Art Space saw a judging panel select their top 12-works.

Fifty-five local artists entered the calendar competition across the four categories of Child, Youth, 2D and 3D.

Cr Gary Allen said DeeDee’s mixed media piece, using sea salt and sponges to create texture, was a perfect choice for the cover.

“The artwork is beautiful, and so colourful. For someone in grade three I have no doubt, there are many more artworks in DeeDee’s future,” Cr Allen said.

“All of the pieces entered this year show the diversity found in the Surf Coast, and every year I love seeing how artists capture and express the theme.”
