The Territory Labor Government is upgrading two key intersections in Palmerston that have seen an increase in traffic over the years and an increase in accidents.
The Emery Avenue and Chung Wah Terrace intersection is set to receive a roundabout with a $5 million upgrade being delivered by Territory Company BMD Construction.
Detailed engineering studies and extensive community consultation determined a round-about would deliver the highest level of traffic efficiency and safety at an intersection where 35 traffic incidents have occurred since 2018.
Furthermore, after listening to community feedback, a dedicated right hand turn lane at Lambrick Avenue and Hutchinson Terrance is being installed by Allan King and Sons who won a $450,000 tender to enhance this right turn off Lambrick Ave which can see traffic bank up.
Upgrades at these two busy intersections will deliver a safer, smoother and more efficient experience on our roads in Palmerston.
In addition, the new look Palmerston Bus Interchange will be complete this month, with Territory company Norbuilt awarded a $2 million contract to deliver a roof extension alongside new facilities which will cater for increased commuters and new school bus routes servicing Palmerston and beyond.
The new roof will provide greater weather protection with two new structures for public transport users to enjoy a safe, cool and dry environment while waiting for the bus.
Upon completion, these upgrades will see an extra shaded seating installed alongside lighting, CCTV and a new accessible toilet facility.
All three projects have invested $7.5 million back into the Palmerston community, supporting over 126 local jobs.
