Delivering more homes to meet needs of regional Tasamanians

Members,

The Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to making a difference in the lives of Tasmanians in need.

Six units recently completed in the State’s North-West are providing new homes for priority applicants from the Housing Register.

”Today I was delighted to be able to meet one of the tenants of these new properties, Sharon, who lives with mobility issues and had been living in an unsuitable three-bedroom property,” Minister Barnett said.

”She has now been able to move into a new home that caters appropriately to her needs, delivering a major improvement to her quality of life.

”And, as an added bonus, Sharon’s previous home is now occupied by a family of five who had been living for many years in a two-bedroom house.

”This is what the Tasmanian Government’s record investment in social and affordable housing is all about – delivering 10,000 homes over the next decade and delivering quality homes that improve the lives of Tasmanians in need,” Minister Barnett said.

The Government recognises that demand for social housing is not confined to our major population centres, and that it is just as important that we increase the number of homes in regional areas.

Housing Choices Tasmania is currently building more than 160 new social housing properties across the North-West, including:

  • a 50-unit development in Wynyard;
  • 48 new homes at West Ulverstone;
  • two developments of 18 units and 16 units in Burnie, and
  • a 10-unit development at Latrobe.

These homes, all due for completion by the end of 2023, will go a long way towards easing the pressure on Housing Register applicants who are seeking a home in the North-West.

Ultimately, increasing housing supply is the best way to combat rising house prices and rents, and to get Tasmanians off the Housing Register and into suitable homes.

This is why we established the innovative Home Tasmania authority to be more agile and responsive to help deliver more homes faster to vulnerable Tasmanians.
