Deloitte report underlines strength in Tasmania’s recovery

Peter Gutwein,Premier & Treasurer

The Deloitte Access Economics Business Outlook Report for the September 2020 quarter confirms that our Plan to Rebuild a Stronger Tasmania is working.

The Report highlighted that despite the pandemic, our economy is forecast to grow strongly, and that our population continues to grow, our business confidence is strong and there’s been a rebound in retail trade as Tasmanians continue to shop local.

The Report found our response to support lives and livelihoods has allowed:

“Tassie to take significant steps towards a ‘normal’ way of life – locals can shop in stores, visit restaurants and travel the state. And that’s boosted business conditions (currently the best in the nation, and confidence isn’t far behind). On top of that, Tasmanians are starting to spend again – to the point that retail trade has bounced back above pre-COVID levels.”

The Report also highlighted our economic and social support as “the largest stimulus packages Tassie has ever seen.” And our ‘Make Yourself at Home’ travel voucher initiative as “a perfect example” of fiscal support “helping to bolster the intrastate tourism spend, and is expected to generate up to $50 million for the industry.”

There is no doubt that our economy is heading in the right direction, but we know there is more to do, which is why we will to continue to support investment and jobs and get Tasmanians into work, rebuilding Tasmania to be the economic powerhouse it was before the COVID-19 pandemic.
