Two key members of the new NSW Department of Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure were honoured over the weekend in the Australia Day 2024 Honours List.
Botanic Gardens of Sydney’s Chief Scientist Professor Brett Summerell was recognised with a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to the environment, while Yugembir man and Principal Architect with Government Architect NSW Dillon Kombumerri was awarded a Public Service Medal.
Professor Summerell has been performing vital scientific research for 35 years at the Gardens, describing over 120 new species of fungi and publishing over 150 journal articles, books and book chapters.
For the past two decades he has also led over 100 scientists, students, volunteers and support staff while helping to establish vital scientific facilities such as PlantClinic, the Australian PlantBank and the National Herbarium of New South Wales.
Dillon Kombumerri is Australia’s first Aboriginal architect, and a founding member of the International Network of Indigenous Architects. Dillon has lectured around the world expounding the value of Indigenous knowledge in delivering better outcomes for the built and natural environment.
His work with GANSW and the Department in establishing the Connecting with Country Framework saw him recognised with a President’s Award by the NSW Institute of Architects as ‘a substantial shift in the way major infrastructure projects are managed’.
Secretary of the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) Kiersten Fishburn said:

“We’re proud to start the year with such incredible recognition for members of the DPHI team, it’s a reminder of the breath, diversity, and depth of the work we do across the Department.
