To celebrate the re-opening of Hills Shire Library branches to the public after a 106-day COVID-19 lockdown, The Hills Shire Library Service is asking its youngest members to design a bookmark.

The Worlds of Wonder Summer Reading Bookmark Design Competition is open to children and teenagers across three different age groups: 5-7 years, 8-10 years and 11-14 years.

The winning designs – one chosen from each age group – will then be printed into bookmarks and distributed at Hills Shire Library branches for the coming year. Winning artists will also receive a book pack prize.

Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne said the competition is a great way to encourage reading, creativity and people back into our libraries.

“We’ve worked really hard to deliver our library services in an online format and to ensure our most vulnerable could continue to access items as part of a free delivery service. However, it’s great to see our libraries back open and people once again utilising this wonderful service,” Mayor Byrne said.

“The Worlds of Wonder Summer Reading Bookmark Design Competition is a fantastic way to help children develop a love of books and reading. It’s also a great way to showcase the creative work of our talented library members.

“I can’t wait to see all the bookmark designs. We are looking for originality, creativity and it also needs to be reflective of our ‘Worlds of Wonder’ theme,” Mayor Byrne added.

Library members can download the bookmark template from The Hills Shire Library Service website: www.thehills.nsw.gov.au/Library.

All entries need to be submitted before Monday, November 8 at 11.59pm. Entries can be submitted online or in-person at any Hills Shire Library branch – Castle Hill, Dural, Baulkham Hills and Vinegar Hill Memorial Library at Rouse Hill Town Centre.

As part of the NSW Public Health Order, all library visitors must show proof of vaccination, sign-in with a QR code and wear a mask if they are 12 years and older.

Hand sanitiser will also be available.
