Disaster assistance following April 2022 Southern Highlands storm event

Department of Home Affairs

Joint media release with the Hon Steph Cooke, New South Wales Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience and Minister for Flood Recovery

Jointly funded Commonwealth-State disaster assistance is now available in the Wingecarribee local government area (LGA) following a severe storm which hit the Southern Highlands on 19 April 2022.

Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Senator the Hon Murray Watt said the weather event across the Wingecarribee LGA had caused significant damage.

“Parts of Wingecarribee experienced heavy rainfall and gale force winds and just as we have for dozens of other LGAs across New South Wales, our governments are supporting the clean-up,” Minister Watt said.

New South Wales Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience and Minister for Flood Recovery Steph Cooke said the assistance will support members of the community who experienced damage to their properties and will help council with the associated infrastructure damage.

“We saw damaging winds and heavy rain leave significant damage in towns and villages right across the Wingecarribee LGA, which is why we are opening up this assistance to impacted homeowners, business owners and primary producers as well as the local council,” Ms Cooke said.

Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Assistance available under the DRFA may include:

  • Help for eligible people whose homes or belongings have been damaged (eligibility criteria apply);
  • Support for council to help with the costs of cleaning up and restoring damaged essential public assets;
  • Concessional interest rate loans for small businesses, primary producers and non-profit organisations; and
  • Freight subsidies for primary producers.
