Displaying election campaign signs

While the upcoming Federal election has not yet been called, we are within (from 21 February) the period in which an election must be held.

Victorian Planning Provisions cover the erection of signs publicising a political event, including an election.

This includes candidate promotion signs which must not be displayed longer than 14 days after the event is held, or for a total of 3 months, whichever is sooner. This is covered by clause (52.05-10) of the Victorian Planning Provisions and applies to all land covered by planning schemes. However, other areas such as Council Land would first require Council approval.

A permit is not required for a sign smaller than 5sq metres.

Council has received complaints in relation to candidate signs installed prior to 21 February however no fines have been issued.
