A man will face court today charged with traffic offences after allegedly being caught speeding in a stolen vehicle, south-west of Gundagai yesterday.
About 4.15pm (Sunday 6 November 2022), officers attached to Riverina Highway Patrol were conducting stationary speed enforcement on the Hume Highway, Mundarlo, when they detected a Range Rover allegedly travelling at 133km/h in a 110km/h sign-posted area.
Police stopped the vehicle and the driver – a 55-year-old man – was subjected to a roadside breath test, returning a negative result. He also underwent a roadside drug test, which allegedly returned a positive reading.
Checks revealed the man is disqualified from driving until July 2023 and the Range Rover was reportedly stolen from a Melbourne home on Saturday 2 July 2022.
A search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered it was displaying false number plates and contained power tools and a number plate, all believed to have been stolen.
The man was taken to Gundagai Police Station where he was subject to a secondary fluid analysis, which allegedly returned a positive detection to methylamphetamine. The results of which will undergo further analysis.
The man was transferred to Wagga Wagga Police Station where he was charged with eight offences:
- drive motor vehicle during disqualification period,
- motor vehicle exceed speed more than 45 km/h – estimated,
- use motor vehicle with unauthorised number plate affixed,
- motor vehicle exceed speed more than 10 km/h – Lidar,
- unlawfully possess number plates,
- drive conveyance taken without consent of owner,
- driver use mobile phone when not permitted, and
- drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous.
Police will allege in court that the man filmed himself while travelling at 170km/h on the Hume Highway Jugiong earlier that day.
The Victorian man was refused bail to appear in Wagga Wagga Local Court today (Monday 7 November 2022).
