Disqualified learner driver charged over fatal crash near Junee, NSW

A man will appear in court today after being charged over a fatal crash in the Riverina region at the weekend.

Emergency services were called to Pattersons Road, Harefield, about 12km south of Junee, after a Hilux utility left the road and hit a tree about 4.45pm on Sunday (31 May 2020).

The passenger, 37-year-old woman, died at the scene, while the driver, 23-year-old man, was taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital with suspected chest and arm injuries. Both are from Junee.

A crime scene was established by officers from Riverina Police District, which was examined by specialist police attached to the Crash Investigation Unit.

Following inquiries, the 23-year-old man was arrested at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital about 5pm yesterday (Monday 1 June 2020) and taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station.

The man was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous, driver motor vehicle during disqualification period, negligent driving occasioning death, contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (DV) and breach bail conditions.

He was refused bail to appear before Wagga Wagga Local Court today (Tuesday 2 June 2020).
